Frequently asked questions

What is The Gauntlet?

The Gauntlet is Veto's core feature — a structured AI conversation that walks you through three frameworks before you decide to buy anything:

  • Physics: What is this object? Is it consumable, durable, or an experience?
  • Psychology: Why do you want it right now? The HALT check asks if you're Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired — emotional states that drive impulse purchases.
  • Economics: Can you actually afford it in real terms? Veto reframes the price into time cost, budget impact, and cost-per-use.
What does a verdict mean?

After running the Gauntlet, Veto issues one of five verdicts — each with a clear rationale:

  • Approved: The case holds up. Buy it with confidence.
  • Denied: The reasoning didn't justify the spend.
  • Conditional: Buy it only if a specific condition is met.
  • Alternative: There's a better way to meet the underlying need.
  • Deferred: Not now, but worth revisiting later.
What is the HALT check?

HALT stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired — the four emotional states most associated with poor financial decisions. When you're in a HALT state, your brain prioritises short-term comfort over long-term wellbeing.

Veto surfaces this check so you can separate genuine need from temporary feeling. If you're in a HALT state, the purchase decision can usually wait.

How does advisor tone work?

You choose how Veto talks to you about your purchases. Three options:

  • Gentle: Supportive and encouraging, focused on positive reinforcement.
  • Balanced: Objective and fact-based. No cheerleading, no lectures.
  • Tough Love: Completely honest about your excuses. Recommended if you have a history of rationalising bad purchases.

You can change your tone at any time in Settings → Profile.

Does Veto connect to my bank account?

No. Veto never connects to your bank, reads your transactions, or asks for financial credentials of any kind. You tell Veto what you're considering buying; it helps you think it through. That's it.

Is Veto free?

Veto offers a free tier that lets you run a limited number of Gauntlet conversations per month. Premium unlocks:

  • Unlimited Gauntlet conversations
  • Spending Pattern Detection
  • Visual Scouting (link and screenshot analysis)
  • Full Outcome Retrospective history

Subscriptions are managed through Apple. You can cancel at any time.

What is the Outcome Retrospective?

30 days after you record a purchase decision, Veto sends a check-in: "Was it worth it?" You rate the purchase and reflect on actual utility vs. expected utility.

Over time, this builds genuine self-awareness about the gap between what you think you'll use and what you actually use.

Is Veto available on Android?

Currently iOS only. Android is on the roadmap — follow us or check back here for updates.

Is my data private?

Your purchase considerations and conversations are stored in your private account. We don't sell your data, show you ads, or share your information with third parties beyond what's necessary to run the app (Firebase infrastructure, anonymous crash reporting via Sentry).

AI analysis happens server-side via encrypted Cloud Functions — your raw data never reaches Anthropic directly. Read the full privacy policy →

Can I delete my account and data?

Yes. Go to Settings → Account → Delete Account. This permanently removes all your data from our servers. The action cannot be undone.
